The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 全场爆笑但又热泪盈眶，看完后想给以前打过五星的电影全部降星，这部电影会像《盗梦空间》一样影史留名。借助最荒诞最搞笑的科幻设定，用华裔移民的背景，讲述能触动每个人心弦的亲情故事。在体验过所有宇宙，经历了所有的可能性，看透了世间万物皆无意义之后，还是要选择留在此时此刻这个似乎并不完美的宇宙，只因母女一场。就像《降临》里，如果你知道自己的女儿会在25岁的时候死去，你还会愿意生下她吗？
怎么看下来感觉此片在讲抑郁症，黑狗变成摄魂怪大贝果。全片围绕一个问题：该如何消解庸常生活中巨大而沉默的无意义感？或许可以伸出恶心又忍不住靠近对方的热狗触手，试着去拥抱亲密关系；可以学着乐观，与人为善，给与我们作对的人一块幸运饼干；可以给一切贴上玩具眼睛，用幽默抵御虚无；可以寻找新情趣，哪怕情趣本身只是“情趣”……做任何能做的，只去过一种生活：当下的！
真的，像《媽的多重宇宙》那種片子，我才不在乎它的主題/內核/故事價值呢，i just dont fucking care，我只想為它的cult氣、激情，創作力量同幻想舉手高呼。真的，什麼亞裔母女家庭有沒有刻板印象，結局算不算傳統又落入俗套，i just dont give a fuck。我只想知道製作團隊是磕了多少藥和菇才搞出那麼多東西，Whatever they had⋯⋯i would like to have some. 謝謝
如果故事在石头宇宙结束，本片将成为虚无主义者的有力宣言；但最后四十分钟，导演仍然告诉我们爱可以解决一切问题。至少在今天，我想这个主题带给我们的精神价值已经足够。

相当搞笑也相当感动，最后20分钟响起Claire De Lune的时候哭了。即使没有你的宇宙我会过得更好，我依然欣然前往你的宇宙；即使时间尺度上一切都会奔向虚无“nothing matters”，我也愿意和你在一起，那些你我存在的宝贵时光是有意义的。作为厨师、歌手、演员，作为洗衣店老板娘、作为母亲的每一个宇宙，都涉及到至少两代人的纠葛与和解，女儿的lesbian和热狗宇宙中母亲的lesbian桥段非常有意思。横亘宇宙的爱，在没有生命的岩石宇宙都能义无反顾地陪女儿坠崖。
一块石头落地，一片花瓣飞天，一颗流星划过，一滴露水凝结。一念之间，瞬息万变，我终归还是爱我所爱，愿我所愿。一步之遥，沧海桑田，我终于还是执我所执，选我所选。在无数个宇宙中感受不同的自己，有成功也有遗憾。在无数次穿越中体会同样的情感，有落寞也有团圆。任世界如何变幻，我爱你的心永远。导演真是玩飞了！狂塞猛叠各种光学污染视听废料，毫无节制的剪辑流强娱乐性拍法，竟然是为了拍一场多元宇宙级别的终极大吵架？！以一种荒诞无稽离经叛道的方式，去呈现爱的破坏性：爱是终极的暴力，它可以毁灭一切，也可以创世再生。真是怪异又迷人的观影体验，观影过程一度感觉：就这？really？直到杨紫琼化身三目童子，用真情武学打通人心的奇经八脉，终于心悦诚服，多元宇宙，因恨分开，因爱聚首。明知道是视觉收割的烂把戏，可就是那么特别。
看得我破口大笑，痛哭流涕…妈妈想不明白，但是妈妈奋不顾身要去每一个宇宙找你。故事gist真的很简单，但是怎么能这么飞这么炫…还很整全…太喜欢joy的长相身型了。杨紫琼太有灵魂了，简直想不出来如果不是她能是谁。想妈妈，想和妈妈一起看，为了妈妈也要好好活着。但我妈肯定：你看你就是我的讨债鬼～😭

但这是个太敷衍的方式，特别是当世界的无数种可能在女儿面前无差别的展开时，爱的这点救赎力量就更值得怀疑。
女儿的台词里甚至问出了我疑惑的这些。可是问题当然没能得到解答。这世上谁能有办法回答这个问题呢？我们只能是接着被困，接着短暂地和解，接着间歇性痛苦抽搐想死对着爸妈随口说的话PTSD到不能呼吸。
全宇宙里面只有一个宇宙是最重要的，那就是你所在的那个宇宙。

在这个世界里，你可以很快乐。
这是让人重新感受到电影的美好和伟大的那种电影！
